The Hermit is the 9th key of the Tarot Arcana and is represented astrologically by the mutable earth sign Virgo, which is ruled by the planet Mercury. Virgo is associated with detail, analysis, critical thinking, and musical composition. Mercury rules both Virgo and Gemini, which is helpful to remember when gaining insight into this archetype. The Hermit represents the cosmic, indivisible self and also one's true inner self. The authentic source of illumination is not a teacher outside oneself; rather it is a voice or light within, which acts as guide and mentor. To hear its direction, one must listen to the voice of conscience and trust one's faith , no matter how faint, in the natural grace that informs all existence.
